Information checked on 24 October 2026.
Whale watching in Tenerife can make a memorable day out during a stay at Villa Dolce Vita in Armeñime. Before booking, decide how long you want to spend at sea, which harbour to use and what type of boat suits your group. This guide compares three options and explains what to check.
These trips take place in open water, so the route and wildlife encounters depend on the day. Leave some flexibility in your holiday schedule in case the sailing needs to be moved.
Puerto Colón or Los Gigantes: choosing your departure port
The options below depart from Puerto Colón in Costa Adeje or Los Gigantes marina. Choose the trip first, then confirm the exact boarding pontoon. Arriving in the town is only the first part of getting to your boat.
From the villa, you can arrange a car journey or taxi. Allow time for traffic, parking and the walk to the pontoon. For eight or nine people, book a vehicle with enough passenger seats or several taxis ahead of time. Our guide to transport from Armeñime explains the wider travel options.
If a tour advertises a transfer, ask for written confirmation of the meeting point and time. Do not assume the coach collects from Villa Dolce Vita. If travelling by public bus, check that day’s route and the final walk before choosing your sailing.
How to check an authorised whale-watching boat
Check the vessel’s name and registration in the MITECO AROC register. On 24 October 2026, Diomedea, Freebird One and Flipper Uno are listed under “Tenerife”. The wording “Tenerife excepto ZEC Franja Teno-Rasca” excludes that protected area. Ask which vessel will operate your booking, since a brand may use several boats.
The Canary Islands Government also provides tourism regulations and a vessel list. The Sustainability Charter is a voluntary commitment, not a replacement for authorisation.
Three boat trips to compare
These are advertised prices checked for this guide, rather than quotes for a particular date. Confirm the final fare, spaces and vessel before paying.
Bonadea II–Diomedea: two hours with a small group
Bonadea II–Diomedea offers two-hour trips from Puerto Colón for up to six passengers, with a hydrophone. There is no onboard toilet or swimming stop on the regular tour. Ask for a price. A party of nine staying at the villa cannot travel together on this option.
Freebird: a catamaran from Puerto Colón
Freebird’s three-hour trip advertises €47 per adult, €23.50 for children aged 4–11 and free places for under-fours. A sandwich and drinks are included. Transfers depend on the confirmed day and meeting point. Ask which vessel is assigned; our AROC check covered Freebird One.
Flipper Uno: depart from Los Gigantes
Flipper Uno advertises a two-hour trip at €33 per adult and €23 per child aged 2–11. The three-hour option costs €40 and €25 respectively, with paella and drinks included. The planned swimming stop depends on sea conditions. Check infant arrangements when booking.
Rules for responsible wildlife watching
Spain’s Royal Decree 1727/2007 sets an exclusion zone of at least 60 metres. Boats must not chase or circle cetaceans. If animals approach a vessel, the skipper must follow the prescribed procedures; an animal coming closer of its own accord is different from a boat pursuing it.
Tenerife’s official tourism guidance specifies a maximum observation time of 30 minutes, not the total trip duration. Swimming with, touching or feeding the animals is prohibited, as are littering and disturbing them with noise. Any swimming stop is separate from the wildlife encounter.
Questions worth asking before you book
- Your party: give the total number and children’s ages, including infants. Confirm that everyone has a place on the same departure.
- Comfort and boarding: ask about toilets, shade, seating and access. A family-friendly description does not establish whether boarding is suitable for someone’s particular mobility needs.
- Cancellations: check your cancellation deadline and what happens if the operator cancels because of sea conditions.
- What’s included: confirm the commentary language, food, optional extras and whether you can skip swimming. A longer cruise does not mean longer spent alongside wildlife.
Bring sun protection, water and a light layer for the wind, and follow the crew’s instructions. For a relaxed day, avoid booking another activity with a tight entry time immediately afterwards. Returning to the harbour and travelling back to the villa also need time.
A relaxed return to Villa Dolce Vita
Villa Dolce Vita has four bedrooms, three bathrooms and room for up to nine guests in Armeñime. Its private heated pool is included in the stay. You can plan a morning on the water and keep the rest of the day free to unwind at the house.
Explore Villa Dolce Vita and check dates and prices for your stay. Boat trips are booked separately with your chosen operator.
